Re. Suse 9.1 pro installation problem
Although Cameron may only actually need one for this particular device, it's apparently usual to have an EHCI controller doing USB 2.0 and a companion controller, OHCI or UHCI, doing USB 1.0. That's correct. My particular USB drive works with just EHCI, but most other USB devices I have (eg mouse, camera) are USB 1

Could anyone help me to install Windows XP in an external USB HDD in the above situation? XP can't boot from an external hard drive, so this isn't going to work for you. I then found that my external USB hard drive had been partitioned by Linux and files installed. Dual Boot Installation to External HD
First of all it wouldn't be bootable in a USB external HDD even if the drive contained a non-corrupted bootable version of the XP OS. Why can't you simply install that HDD as a secondary HDD in your PC, boot to your new HDD and see if you can access the data on the problem HDD that way?

Simply relocate the Hard Drive and perform a repair installation to set the XP system to the new environment. You can buy your new PC without the OS.
